Admission Criteria

  • Any student who falls behind their respective Cohort Group must attend Summer School. Summer School will be provided at no cost.
  • Students who remain behind cohorts will be placed in the Credit Recovery Path irrespective of their pre-9th grade diploma choice selection.
  • Students who catch up to their cohort have the option to return to the non-credit recovery path. However, this must be done by the beginning of their 11th grade year. Any student who falls behind after 1st term of their junior year will remain on the Credit Recovery Path.
  • Students who graduate from the Credit Recovery Path must take 3 career technical education courses in one area.
  • Credit Recovery Path students are not eligible for Advanced Endorsements of any type but may earn a Career Tech Endorsement.
  • Credit Recovery Path students are not eligible for placement within the order of graduating rank.

    Credit Recovery Path Students…
  • Remain eligible for extracurricular activities at their zoned school as long as they meet the state standards for participation.
  • May participate in regular school activities such as homecoming, athletic events, and graduation ceremonies.
  • Enroll in Odysseyware and ACCESS courses at no cost to student

What is it all about?

The Pike County School System is proud to announce the Agriscience Technology Academy. As an innovator in K-12 education, Pike County has worked diligently to continue to bring meaningful, real-world education to its students.
In the Fall of 2015, the Pike County Schools introduced the Agriscience Technology Academy to its growing list of academies. Pike County has partnered with post-secondary institutions like Auburn University, Enterprise State Community College, and Wallace State Community College at Hanceville to offer to qualified students, the opportunity to work towards an Associate in Science Degree with a concentration in Agriscience.

The students will earn this degree while working to complete their Alabama High School Diploma. The program is designed for students to enter at the start of their sophomore year and work for the next 3 years to complete the program. Upon completion, students may choose to continue their Agriscience education or enter the work-force as a career-ready worker.

The Pike County Agriscience Technology Academy is physically housed on the campus of Goshen High School, where there are 21 acres dedicated to agriscience technology. The dual enrollment courses are offered through Enterprise State Community College and Wallace State Community College at Hanceville. The core academic courses are offered through Enterprise State Community College via on-line instruction.   The agricultural classes are offered through Wallace State Community College at Hanceville. The Pike County Schools has key agriscience instructors certified to teach the dual enrollment content offered via Wallace State Community College at Hanceville.

The faculty and students are excited to grow this innovative new opportunity while cultivating a state-of-the-art agriscience program designed to prepare students to creatively address agricultural challenges of today and tomorrow. With programs like this, the Pike County School System is leading the way in helping to make students ready for the challenges of agriscience careers of tomorrow.

How to get started… For consideration into the Agriscience Technology Academy, students must:

  • Enroll in a Pike County School
  • Apply in the 9th grade
  • Have a GPA of 3.0 or higher
  • ACT or COMPASS Scores of:  ACT 20 or higher in Reading, 20 or higher in English/Writing 23 or higher in Mathematics
  • OR COMPASS requirements:  English 101 qualifying score, Math 112/113 qualifying score
  • Good Attendance
  • Good Discipline
  • Overall Good Standing with their school

Arts Academy

Upon successful completion of high school graduation, students will have also earned an Associate of Science in General Education with an emphasis in Theatre/Drama, through dual enrollment with Troy University.

 

For consideration into the Arts Academy,students must:

  • Enroll in a Pike County School
  • Apply in the 9th grade
  • Have a GPA of 3.0 or higher
  • ACT/ Compass Requirements of :  ACT- 20 or higher in English/Writing 23 or higher in Mathematics or COMPASS-English 1101 qualifying score and Math 1112 qualifying score

  • Good Discipline/Conduct
  • Overall Good Standing with their school

Business and Finance Academy
Business and Finance Academy
The Academy of Business & Finance was established in 2001 and at the same time began an affiliation with the National Academy Foundation which serves more than 88,000 students throughout the United States. NAF academies are organized around one of five career themes – Finance, Hospitality & Tourism, Information Technology, Health Sciences, or Engineering. In addition to core academic courses, students take industry-specific classes related to these themes and participate in work-based learning activities to put their lessons into action. The Finance theme connects high school students with the world of financial services and personal finance, offering a curriculum that covers banking and credit, financial planning, global finance, securities, insurance, accounting, and economics. Since 2003, more than 200 students have graduated with a Certificate of Financial Studies from NAF. In 2010, we partnered with Enterprise State Community College and began offering college credit to our Academy of Business & Finance students. The seniors of 2012 were the first graduates to graduate with an Advanced High School Diploma/Advanced Career Technical Education Endorsement and an Associate in Applied Science Degree. Students must complete 70 hours of college credit while they are in the Academy of Business & Finance in order to be awarded their Associate Degree.  In addition to coursework, students have numerous opportunities to be involved in community service activities. A minimum of 60 hours is required in order to receive a Community Service Endorsement with their diploma.

For consideration into the Business and Finance Academy, students must:

  • Apply in the 9th/10th grade (2016-17 only)
  • Have a GPA of 3.0 or higher
  • ACT or COMPASS Scores of: ACT 20 or higher in English/Writing OR COMPASS English 101 qualifying score
  • Passed Accounting I (10th grade applicants only)

    Students who participate in the Academy receive training at the First National Bank Academy Branch Training Facility located on PCHS campus and students will participate in a paid internship at the First National Bank—Main Branch during the summer between their junior and senior year.
First in Flight and Leadership Academy
First in Flight

The Pike County First in Flight and Leadership Academy provides high school students with a unique instructional experience that allows them to earn:  

  • high school diploma,
  • advanced academic endorsement,
  • advanced career technical education endorsement,
  • academy endorsement, and
  • a post-secondary associate degree from Troy University.

During the course of the three year program, students are dual enrolled in their home high school and Troy University. Through this partnership students earn over 60 hours of college credit toward an associate degree while completing their high school requirements at the same time. The associate degree includes a minor in leadership.

Additionally, through a partnership with Trojan Aviation and Mauna Loa Helicopters, students are provided with ground school training and accumulate actual fight hours that places them well on their way to their private pilot license. There is no cost to students who participate in this program.

What are the criteria for admission?

  • Students must be reliable, self-motivated, and self-disciplined.
  • Students must be in good standing and must have a 3.0 GPA or higher and be eligible for admission to Troy University.
  • ACT Score 20 overall—20 in English and 23 in Mathematics.
  • Students must complete an application packet which includes a short essay, explaining why they believe they should be accepted into this program.
  • Students must sit for a personal interview with a selection committee which includes staff from PCS, Trojan Aviation, and Troy University.
  • Students must have parental permission to participate in this program.
Global Studies Academy
Global Studies Academy
The Global Studies Academy will prepare high schools to compete in the workforce of the 21st Century and prepare them to enter the nation's best colleges and universities.  Upon successful graduation of high school, students will also have earned 24 credit hours through dual enrollment with Troy University.

Admission Criteria...

  • Enroll in a Pike County School
  • Apply during the 10th grade year
  • ACT—20 (with a 20 in English)
  • GPA 3.0 minimum
  • Good attendance
  • Good discipline/Conduct
  • Overall good standing with their school
  • Academy application completed
  • Transcript
  • Recommendation letter from administrator (School/District)

  • Essay – 125-200 word explaining why you would be an excellent candidate for one of our academies.
  • Complete Troy University admission process.

    Students meet in the cohort group on Tuesdays and Thursdays at the Pike County Virtual High School. Study time is provided on an individual bases or in groups.  The remaining time is spent in enrichment activities which follow monthly themes.  Some of these include Hands-On Art, Communication, Fitness, History, Careers, Photography and Fine Arts. Each month the students also participate in a community service activity in an effort to teach the students to give back to the community.  The cohort is an integral part of the Global Studies Academy. The atmosphere is relaxed and the group quickly becomes a "family" as they support and help one another.
